Playdates for Working Moms in Wichita

It’s hard to work outside the home as a mom, especially when your kids are young. I have been a stay-at-home mom, too, and while that is also not easy (being a mom is hard work, period), there are advantages when your child is younger and you want to schedule playdates with other kids, or attend activities geared towards the toddler and preschool set.

Here are some ideas for around town fun you can have with your family after work and on weekends.

Story Times

While most story times are during the day, the Wichita Public Library has one at the Central branch on Tuesday evenings, and often offers special events like puppet shows or crafts in the evenings. Check out our comprehensive listing of Story Times in Wichita, as well as the Wichita Public Library calendar (hint: sort events by “Children,” “Storytime,” or “Puppet Show” for great choices). Barnes and Noble, Watermark, and the Mulvane Public Library also have story times on Saturday mornings.

Jump Around

Aviate at the Wichita Sports Forum has Open Jump until 10pm every day and on weekends. Urban Air has open jump until 8pm during the week and on weekends.  Jumpy Jump Land‘s hours vary by location, but all locations have weekend and/or evening hours. My Gym has open play hours and classes on evenings and Saturdays.

Get Arty

Music Together of Wichita has weekend classes. The Wichita Art Museum offers family Art Ventures throughout the month, some of which are on Saturdays.

Local Attractions

All of our local museums and attractions have weekend hours. The Sedgwick County Zoo and Exploration Place are our family’s favorite places to get the wiggles out on the weekends. Botanica and Old Cowtown are both open on Saturdays and Sundays as well. There are several lesser known local museums with Saturday and/or Sunday hoursthat may have specific things of interest to you and your child: the Museum of World Treasures, Sedgwick County Historical Museum, and the Kansas Aviation Museum.

One with Nature

Of course, when the weather is nicer, there are many more options – meeting up at a local pool, park or splash pad are our favorites. The Great Plains Nature Center is open and often has special events on the weekends.

No matter what you are your child(ren) enjoy, there are lots of ideas, even for us working moms, to set up playdates or spend quality time with our kids.

Where does your family like to spend time together after work hours?

Meaghan Koci
Meaghan wears many hats throughout the day: wife to husband of fifteen years, Jeremy, mom to two incredible children, Jacob and Aliza, legal assistant, foster parent, and surrogate. A Wichita native, she met her husband at K-State (Go State!) and they moved from coast (Los Angeles, CA) to coast (Manchester, NH and Groton, CT) before settling back down in Kansas. She is a big fan of her crock pots, has read more than a novel a day for the last five years, and crochets in her “spare” time.
