Wichita Moms Guide to August 2018 Events

It’s Back to School time! We’ve got posts about embracing back to school shopping and tips for a successful back-to-school experience. Buy those pencils and crayons and keep scrolling for other fun things to do in Wichita this month!

We are thrilled to bring this resource in collaboration with some of our favorite community partners: Botanica and Sedgwick County Zoo! To make planning easy, we are excited to highlight their August events below:

Botanica 

Tuesdays on the Terrace

August 7, 14, 21, 28,  6:00 – 8:00pm, $10 and $5 for members. There will be food for sale and a cash bar. Come and enjoy live music and community! August 7 – Sunshine the Bunny; August 14 – Jim Vegas; August 21 – Mountain Deer Revival; August 28 – King Midas and the Mufflers.

Kids Night Out

August 7, 5:30 – 8:00pm, $25 and $22 for members. Let the kids have a fun night out while the adults enjoy Tuesdays on the Terrace. Kids get to explore the gardens, have snacks and make crafts. Ages 5+. Registration required.

Sedgwick County Zoo

Back to School Bash

August 4, 8:30am – 5:00pm. $3 admission for everyone (members get in free.) Celebrate the end of summer!

Dog Days of Summer

August 4, 10:00am-2:00pm. Stop by the Pride of the Plains to see the African Painted Dogs on a day dedicated to awareness and appreciation of the species.

Adult Adventures: Beastly Beers

August 18, 6:00 – 8:00pm Do you like animals? Do you like beer? Then come try some amazing beers from around
the world chosen especially for this event by House of Schwan! Walk part of the beautiful Sedgwick County Zoo enjoying amazing beer and fine food provided by our very own Beastro, all while listening to live music. All attendees must be 21 years or older. Ticket sales end 48 hours prior to the event. Tickets are $35 for members and $40 for non-members.

Head to the zoo for after hours fun at Twilight Tuesday.
Aug 1-7:
Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week with lots of events all over Wichita.
Aug 1-2: Wichita Center for Performing Arts is performing a special storytime of the Velveteen Rabbit.
August 2- 3: Get rocking and learn a thing or two at Schoolhouse Rock, Jr

WEEKEND August 3-5
Aug 3-4: Argh, matey! The Legend of Captain Kidd is playing.
Aug 3
: Dads, grab your best girl and take her to the Bel of the Ball dance. 
Aug 3: One last movie in the park for summer – Jumanji is playing in Goddard.

: If you like wings, don’t miss Wingapalooza 2018

: Kansas Humane Society is hosting a Family Fun Day.

Aug 6: Who you gonna call? Go see the original Ghostbusters at the Orpheum.

Aug 7: Bel Aire is celebrating National Night Out with food, sno-comes, and games.
Aug 7: Take your towel to Prairie Wind Park for a Waterbash.
Aug 8: Over in the Waterfront, Kendra Scott is hosting a Sip and Shop
Aug 9: Rock River Rapids is having a free preschool game day
Aug 9-10: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a great show for the family.

: Our friends at Brightwater Bay are hosting an end of summer Moms Night Out for the ages.
Aug 9: Wax on! Wax off! Go to the pop-up park to see The Karate Kid.    

WEEKEND August 10-12
Aug 10: If you’ve ever wanted to sit in a monster truck, look no further.
Aug 10: What better way to celebrate National S’mores Day than with the s’mores inventors themselves?
Aug 10: Dinosaur lovers may want to wish T-rex goodnight during Bedtime at Field Station.
Aug 11: Enjoy your yoga practice on the lawn of the art museum. 
Aug 11: Get lifted with a free barre class (registration required).
Aug 11: Talk a walk around the Keeper and find some Pokemon.

: CityArts is hosting a family art project making artistic summer treats.

: Celebrate back to school with your community at the park!
Aug 11: Bring your baby and your carrier to the monthly International Babywearers of Wichita August meeting.
Aug 11: Head north to Bethel College for a bazaar and open house – lots of shopping and fun for everyone.

Aug 13-14: Garden Sprouts is learning about Wonderful Waterlilies
Aug 13: Bring the family for BINGO night at Chick-fil-a. 
Aug 14
: Tuesdays on the Terrace at Botanica promises good drinks, delicious food, and live music.
Aug 14: If no one near you has planned a Neighborhood Night Out, you should!
Aug 16: Barry’s Recreation Station is popping up at Central Riverside Park.
Aug 16: Preschoolers need STEAM too – try out this book and STEAM club.  

WEEKEND August 17-19
Aug 18: My spidey-senses are tingling – learn all about arachnids at Great Plains Nature Center. 
Aug 18: Time for a night on the town at this Tipsy Tea Party.  
Aug 18: Bottoms up! Beastly Beers is back at the zoo! 
Aug 19: Kansas Critters are ready to play this afternoon. 
Aug 19: Celebrate Wichita and Summer at this concert

Week:: August 19-25

Aug 21: Tuesdays on the Terrace at Botanica promises good drinks, delicious food, and live music.
Aug 23: Play some retro games with the family. 

WEEKEND August 24-26

Aug 24: Put on your most fabulous shoes to celebrate Wine, Women and Shoes 2018.  
Aug 24-28: Stock up for back-to-school during Rhea Lana‘s consignment sale.
Aug 25: There’s a race for every bicyclist at Pedal Fest.
Aug 25: Teach your kids about Frida Kahlo while supporting worthy causes. 
Aug 25: Pizza! Pizza! ICT Pizza Fest is here! 
Aug 25: If you haven’t seen Wonder yet, enjoy it at Hap McLean Park.

Week:: August 26-30

Aug 28: Tuesdays on the Terrace at Botanica promises good drinks, delicious food, and live music.

WMB Neighborhood Group Meet-Ups

Wichita Neighborhood Mom Groups are having all kids of activities in your neighborhood and connecting online to share recommendations and advice. Click here to join your Neighborhood Group, and see below for what’s going on near you this month.

East Wichita/Andover Group is having a Moms Mingle at Reverie on August 2.  
Derby/South Wichita Group 
is hosting a moms’ night out at the movies on August 22.
North Wichita/Bel Aire Group 
is meeting for a moms’ night out on August 16 and jumping at Aviate on August 30. 
West Wichita/Goddard/Maize Group has a couple of visits scheduled to Papa Murphy’s for a make and take.


Regularly Scheduled Programming

Many local places have recurring events that are great for moms and families, and you can find them here: 

  • Aviate has Junior Jump Monday through Friday for the younger crowd.
  • Botanica has a Garden Storytime every Thursday morning, in the Children’s Library or weather permitting in the gardens. 
  • Sensory Friendly play at Exploration Place on the second Sunday of every month
  • Urban Air has Jumparoo Toddler Jump every Tuesday and Friday.
  • Home Depot has a free Kids’ DIY workshop on the first Saturday of every month.
  • Family Night at Museum of World Treasures is the first Thursday of the month.
  • Every Friday the Kansas Aviation Museum has a special ticket price for families.
  • Make ICT has free access to their makerspace every other Monday.
  • Kansas Children’s Service League has a support group for Parents of Special Needs Children on the third Monday of every month. 
  • Moxi Junction hosts story and craft time every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10:30am.
