Music Theatre Wichita is planning five large-scale musicals again this summer, providing Broadway-caliber productions handcrafted for Wichita audiences.
There’s something for everyone, with family-friendly shows and grown-up fun. You’ll also see the Broadway stars of today and tomorrow – many leading actors will come direct from Broadway (on a two week “vacation” in the ICT!), and each year nearly 40 alumni of MTWichita’s collegiate resident company perform on Broadway. It’s often a short trip from Wichita to NYC. For example, the stars of A Bronx Tale currently running in New York are Christiani Pitts (MTWichita resident company 2015) and Adam Kaplan (Link Larkin in MTWichita’s 2017 production of Hairspray).
Here are the details of this summer’s shows, with suggestions on who you should take with you!
Sister Act June 13-17 Disco diva Deloris Van Cartier breathes new life into a convent and her community in this uplifting show, based on the 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg that we all know and love! Add dinner or drinks with some friends, and this is a great Girls Night Out!
“Luck Be a Lady”
Guys and Dolls June 27-July 1 Guys and Dolls is often called “the perfect musical.” Everything is great – music, lyrics, story. You’ll love the dancing gangsters and the straight-laced heroine who gets swept away by romance! Everyone will love this show, a great fit for the whole family or a special date night.
“I’m Not Myself Today”
Freaky Friday July 11-15 Calling all moms with teenagers (or moms with eight-year-olds who act like teenagers?)! Whether you’re already deep into those teen years or just starting that tug of war for independence, this show will touch your heart with its smart, funny take on the classic tale of swapped identities. This show helps us all take a look at the world from another’s perspective and entertains at the same time.
“Magic to Do”
Pippin July 25-29 Circus spectacle and Fosse-style choreography explode from the stage in this brand new re-imagining of the 1972 Broadway smash hit. The Choreographer/Co-Director of the production is Al Blackstone, who is a regular choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance! This show is funny and sexy, perfect for a night out with some of the grown-ups in your life!
“Under the Sea”
Disney’s The Little Mermaid August 8-18 The tale of Ariel and her journey to the world above the sea is a perfect introduction to the theatre for little ones! MTWichita requires that children be age 5 or older to attend a production, BUT there is one matinee performance (Saturday, August 18, 2pm) where children ages 3 and 4 can also attend. Grab your princesses and princes and get ready for a magical experience!
IF YOU HAVE A BUDDING STAR…
If your kids take to the theatre and want to give it a go, Wichita has plenty of options! Music Theatre Wichita has summer programs behind the scenes for teens that have finished their freshman year of high school, and opportunities for all ages onstage. Auditions are held in February of each year – information and tips can be found at mtwichita.org in the education section.
Music Theatre Wichita’s ticket prices are a fraction of Broadway ticket prices (and you can drive home afterwards!). But if the price range of $32-69 per ticket is out of your family’s budget, there’s another option for you to try.
Two hours before curtain any remaining tickets in the mid orchestra, rear orchestra, or balcony are sold at half price. That puts matinee tickets as low as $16 each and evening shows as low as $17 each.
To try this out, you would arrive at the box office of Century II as early as two hours before the show and ask for the ½ price mid orchestra, rear orchestra, or balcony tickets. Matinees regularly sell out, and the tickets can only be purchased in person, but you can check online to see if there are seats open before running down to Century II.
