7 Myths About Injectables and Fillers

Thank you to the Plastic Surgery Center for sponsoring this post and offering the women of Wichita amazing skincare options!

Injectables and fillers are “magic in a needle,” but we find there’s a lot of misinformation circling around the internet and even by word of mouth.

Sometimes people are afraid to try these treatments, yet products like BOTOX, JUVEDERM and others can help you combat the effects of aging and look natural at the same time.

We’d like to introduce you to our favorite anti-aging treatments and dispel the myths. Let’s look at the top seven myths about injectables and fillers.

Myth #1: Injectables and Fillers are Painful

When having a skin care procedure such as injectables or fillers, you are having a non-surgical procedure. Therefore, you can expect faint or mild to no discomfort if your treatment is done right.

If you are having your procedure done in a medical setting, expect your nurse to numb your skin with a topical numbing cream to make you as comfortable as possible. You can rest assured that your procedure is done correctly and with little discomfort. Many fillers contain lidocaine which also reduces discomfort.

Myth #2: BOTOX® is the Same as Fillers

BOTOX and fillers are not the same. BOTOX® Cosmetic and XEOMIN® are used to treat both moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet lines. BOTOX is also FDA approved for lines in the forehead.

Both products target one of the underlying causes of frown lines and crow’s feet – the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years.

Your nurse specialist injects these muscles with BOTOX to temporarily reduce muscle activity, so you notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines and frown lines between your brows.

Fillers do just what they sound like. They add immediate, long-lasting volume to different areas of your face and hands. Your skin care expert may use filler on your temples, to lift your cheeks, smooth parentheses lines, treat severe wrinkles and folds, plump your lips or restore volume in the back of your hands.

Myth #3: You Will Become Addicted

Some people think that once they get fillers or injectables, they’ll get addicted. While you may enjoy how your face looks, you can’t get physically addicted to fillers and injectables.

Both are temporary, though, and last between several months and two years depending on what’s injected and where it’s used. Once they gradually dissolve nothing is left behind, except in some cases, new collagen growth. Rest assured that all you might become addicted to is how great you look!

Myth #4: The Effects are Permanent

BOTOX and XEOMIN usually last about three-four months. When it comes to fillers, you can expect results up to one or two years, depending on the filler. If you want to maintain your rejuvenated look, you’ll need to continue both injectables and fillers for the best results.

Myth #5: All Fillers are the Same

Injectable dermal fillers can plump thin lines, enhance shallow contours, soften facial creases, remove wrinkles and even improve the appearance of recessed scars.

Because of their wide-ranging treatment results, you’ll find many different types of fillers on the market today:

  • RADIESSE is a wrinkle filler used to plump the skin. It treats moderate-to-severe creases such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines and frown lines, enhances fullness of the cheeks and other facial contours, and improves volume by restoring your own collagen.
  • The JUVÉDERM® collection of fillers adds volume to a different area of the face to lift cheeks, smooth parentheses lines, or plump the lips. The results are subtle and long-lasting.
  • BELOTERO BALANCE® is a dermal filler specially designed to integrate into your skin and mold to your distinct facial contours to soften lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth for smooth and natural results.
  • KYBELLA® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells under the chin to improve your profile.

Myth #6: It Doesn’t Matter Who Injects You

Many people think that anyone can inject BOTOX or fillers. They don’t think it matters if it’s at a day spa, the dentist or a surgical office. Yet, it certainly does matter.

The saying, “You get what you pay for,” is certainly true when it comes to fillers and injectables. Just because a day spa offers your treatment for less doesn’t mean you should have them do it.

You want a registered nurse injector with years of experience who is highly skilled and trained in the proper technique. This is not only for your safety but for the best possible results.

Myth #7: Injections are as Good as a Facelift

Another misconception is that injectables and fillers provide the same benefits as a facelift. While they are an exceptional way to reduce the signs of aging, they don’t offer permanent results.

We believe in prevention and recommend beginning your treatments early to combat aging. But, there is a limit to what we can achieve with injectables.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons explains that at some point, a facelift, browlift or eyelift may be your best option. Injections can delay the need for a facelift, but they can’t tighten lax skin or fix eyelid drooping.

If you’re unsure which way to turn, our expert staff can help you sort through your options. With a number of minimally invasive options, including fillers and injectables, as well as surgical options, you’ll find our team can help you throughout the years.
