Winter Trends to Try (And Where to Find Them in Wichita)

Cooler temperatures have finally arrived, and with them come a whole slew of new options for your wardrobe. Personally, I LOVE the fashion that comes with a drop in temperatures; fewer digits equals more layers, and more ways to mix and match the pieces I already have. If you’re looking to add to your wardrobe this season, however, here are some good places to start.

Texture

Gone are the days when winter means being confined to wool sweaters until spring; your fabric options are plentiful this season. Whether you love (faux) fur, velvet, satin, (faux) leather and suede, plaid, chenille, etc., they’re all readily available at your favorite store. Fur jackets and vests are always winter go-tos, but this year try some fur-trimmed mules to make an unexpected statement (and keep your toes ultra-warm). Pair a velvet or satin slip dress with a structured jacket and ankle boots to bring luxurious texture to your ‘night out’ look. Throw on a leather mini with a cozy sweater and tights. Do use a little restraint, though, and limit the number of textured pieces in each outfit.

Mules

We all know Kansas weather can be, *ahem*, finicky. Enter mules. They provide enough cover to keep your toes warm, but you’re not totally confined like you would be in boots. They’re perfect for mild winter days and add some chic polish to any outfit. Whether dressed up, like a v-front heeled version, or dressed down, like a pair of square-toed flats, mules are definitely on-trend this season.

The Color Red

The color red was EVERYWHERE on the runways this season and the bolder, the better. I’m talking full-on, head-to-toe red. If that’s a little too aggressive for your taste, though, just work it in piece by piece. Find a killer red sweater, or grab a red bag or shoes. Add your favorite red lipstick to your everyday look, or swipe on some cherry-red nail polish. Find a way to add some red that suits your taste and style.

Sleeve Detailing

Sleeves – the unsung heroes of winter-wear – are finally getting their time to shine. I’ve seen everything from rhinestone-embellishment, embroidery, and bell sleeves to sleeves with ties, studs, and ruffles. Really, if you’re calling attention to your sleeves, you’re doing it right.

Distressed Denim

I know, denim is kind of a given. It goes with everything and seemingly never goes out of style. There are some new twists on denim that you might want to take note of, though. You’ve probably seen distressed denim for a little while now, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. (Tasteful) destruction is still popular, so grab a pair of jeans with a few holes in them. Distressing has also spread to hemlines, with fraying, asymmetrical hems, and step hems. Try pairing your distressed jeans with a polished blazer and heels for a chic, grown-up take on the trend.

Boots

Like denim, boots are always ‘in’ for winter; this year is no exception. Ankle, Chelsea, knee-high, over-the-knee; if you can think it up you can probably find it. The most prevalent boot trend I’ve seen this year comes in the form of white ankle boots – they’re all over Instagram influencers’ feeds. I’ve also seen boots with brocade patterns, sock boots, lace-up boots, slouchy boots, and shimmery boots. Grab some boots and you’re instantly on-trend.

As always with fashion, be confident, be yourself, and have fun!
