Basic Momdrobe :: Four Staple Pieces for Fall

I’m over summer. Don’t get me wrong — I love the time we spend swimming and playing at the splash pad for hours, but I’m over the heat. September 22nd is the first day of fall and I am SO excited! I’m ready for plaid shirts, sweaters, boots and fun scarves. I’m ready for the sounds and smells of fall. I’m counting down the days until I can have pumpkin spice everything.

I wish the weather would agree with the date on the calendar and be cooler, but in Kansas September can often be a very warm month. However, that doesn’t stop me from breaking out my fall wardrobe! I try to go through all of my clothes at the beginning of fall and spring. One of my favorite things I do when I’m deciding what to keep and what to get rid of is putting together outfits based on staple pieces. When I do this I can eliminate the “need” for so many clothes. I hate the term “mom uniform”, but I’m a mom and I wear clothes so here are my favorite fall pieces and outfits to complete my “momdrobe”.

Fall Staple #1: A Great Vest

You can’t go wrong with a vest in the fall. It’s a very popular look, and it pairs well with just about anything. I like to pair denim jeans, black jeans or even leggings with my vest. Just like with bottoms, you almost can’t go wrong with the top you choose to wear under the vest. I personally love anything with stripes and this is the perfect way to wear stripes if you’re afraid of them making you look too wide. Mix print is a big trend for fall too so I love the cheetah shoes with the striped top. Boots work well with this look, too.

Fall Staple #2: A Basic Tee

I love a basic, plain tee that has a little bit of a fun feature to it. You can pair it with denim jeans, colored jeans or leggings. By adding a scarf to the outfit it looks a little more put together especially if it’s a plaid. Wear it with booties, tall boots, flats or cute sneakers and you’re good to go!

Fall Staple #3: A Plaid Button-Down

If there’s one indicator that fall is just around the corner, it’s when you start seeing plaid shirts fill the stores. I’m a sucker for red and blue plaid, especially when paired with dark jeans and tall boots. This is my favorite look for fall by far. It’s so simple, and it’s a classic.

Fall Staple #4: Denim/Chambray

Another popular outfit choice for fall is a denim or chambray top. This is a versatile kind of top because you can wear a chambray top all year long! My favorite way to wear chambray in the fall is to pair a button down with a hunter green (or other fall color) tee, black leggings and some slip-on sneakers to keep it comfortable. By trading out the sneakers for tall boots and adding a scarf with a fun print (I love to add plaid where I can!) can dress this look up while still staying comfortable (Shout-out to leggings!).

I’m all about comfort and turning comfortable outfits into looking a little more dressed up without a lot of effort. I don’t know about the rest of you mamas, but it’s a luxury if I can get a shower, completely do my hair and makeup all in the same morning. My hope is that by wearing cute outfits it distracts people from noticing that I’m on day three of dry shampoo and yesterday’s mascara.

Here’s to hoping that we get to experience cooler fall weather earlier than usual this year because I will be wearing my boots come September even if it’s 90 degrees outside, and I really don’t want to be sweating at the pumpkin patch this year.
