No Sew Costumes for Halloween

Children In Halloween Costumes Trick Or TreatingSpecial thanks to Wichita State University’s Office for Workforce, Professional and Community Education for bringing quality programs to moms in our area.

The kids are back in school, and fall is in the air! Halloween decorations have replaced school supplies on store shelves, and if your kids are like mine, they are already clamoring to look at Halloween costumes and arguing over what they want to be this year.

Some moms relish the task of creating a Halloween costume. They pore over Pinterest looking for costume ideas that will showcase their craftiness. Others (like me) head to the nearest discount or party store and spend a small fortune on a pre-made costume and accessories.

As I watch my daughter parade through the halls of her school in her Disney princess costume, one of dozens of Elsas or Annas, I swear to myself, “Next year is going to be different. Next year I am going to start early. I am going to search Pinterest and Google the internet in search of unique costume ideas. I, too, can be a crafty mom!”

There’s just one small (or in my case, insurmountable) problem:

I don’t sew – not a stitch!

I also can’t operate a glue gun, and truth be told, I am not great at hands on activities. Is there any hope for moms like me?

There is now! Wichita State University’s Office for Workforce, Professional and Community Education is offering a No-SEW Costumes class. This two-week course will offer instruction, ideas and examples for making a Halloween costume without sewing. You will actually create a costume in class under the direction of costume designers Renea Goforth & Julie Holmes from the School of Performing Arts at Wichita State University. Renea and Julie will show how to use items you already have at home to make your child’s costume stand out from the rest. This is a great class for individuals like me who don’t know where to start on creating their child’s costume.

Costume ideas that will be presented are Princess/Fairy; Superhero/Heroine; Animal; Monster/Zombie, etc. Remember no sewing or crafting knowledge is required!

Class begins September 24th! For more information or to register, click here. Please contact WSU Community Education staff at 316-978-3731 with questions.
