I love a summer beach read, but one of my favorite things about fall is curling up with a good book and a cozy blanket. Here are some of the books on my autumn reading list and wish list (my 6 year old helped compile some of his favorites, too!).
Books for Moms:
Girl Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis
The Chic Site blogger’s book is one of my favorites! In this refreshingly honest book, Hollis discusses some of the common lies and misconceptions that women often tell themselves. Hollis is brave enough to share the messiness in her own life and the tips have helped her live more joyfully.
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
The Nightingale is the tale of two sisters and their struggle to survive in war-torn France during World War II. The younger sister joins the Resistance while the older sister must protect her daughter after their home is seized by German soldiers. Inspired by the real-life story of Belgian teenager Andree de Jongh who organized an escape route out of Nazi-occupied France, this book is truly a story of survival. A great choice if you enjoy historical fiction.
Aurora Teagarden series by Charlaine Harris
In my favorite mystery series, librarian Aurora Teagarden solves crimes with the help of the Real Murders Club. All of the books in this series are suspenseful and fun reads! Several of these crime novels have been adapted into television movies, as well.

Fall Books for Kids:
Pigeon Books by Mo Willems (ages 2-6)
A persistent pigeon tries to get his way in various predicaments. The reader is tasked with keeping the pigeon in line as he tries to stay up late, drive the bus and get a puppy. You might recognize some of your children’s behaviors in the pigeon!
Pig The Pug (ages 4-7)
A greedy little pug learns the value of sharing through adventures with a Dachshund named Trevor. We love the laugh-out-loud illustrations and rhymes. Pig The Pug is first in a series with the most recent being Pig The Star.
Fly Guy books by Tedd Arnold (ages 5-7)
My 6 year old loves this easy-to-read series about a boy and his pet fly. Also check out the Fly Guy non-fiction books where Fly Guy introduces facts about sharks, dinosaurs, space and more!
Magic Tree house series by Mary Pope Osbourne (ages 6-9)
A mysterious tree house transports two siblings back in time. This educational series teaches kids about history and teamwork. What’s not to love? Dinosaurs Before Dark is the first book in the series, but you could start with any of the books.
The Magic Misfits by Neil Patrick Harris (ages 8-12)
Magic tricks are big at our house right now, so this was the perfect choice to read with my 6 year old. We read it together since he is a newer reader. A young street magician named Carter runs away from his crooked uncle and teams up with a group of other kid magicians. My son loved learning magic tricks throughout the book, too! The Magic Misfits: The Second Story was published in September 2018, and we can’t wait to read it.
Wonder by R.J. Palacio (grades 4-7)
A New York Times bestselling book and movie of the same name, Wonder tells the story of a 10-year-old boy with a facial deformity. The story is also told from the perspectives of the boy’s classmates, family and others. Difficult subjects are tackled in this book with humor and sensitivity. This book is a bit beyond my first grader’s reading level, but I am looking forward to reading it with him in the next few years. A good way to introduce discussions about bullying, acceptance and friendships!
Fall Books for Tweens and Teens:
We haven’t quite reached the tween or teen stage at our house yet, but if you have children in that age range, these might be of interest.
