Hidden around town are landmarks and backdrops perfect for capturing a Wichita childhood. Head out with your kiddos and your smart phone to get snaps of them in some seriously #Wichitawesome spots. Whether you call Wichita home for good or just a short time, you’ll always cherish photos of your kids in these uniquely Wichita settings.
Wichita Flag: No Wichita symbol has become more recognizable in recent history than our flag. It makes a striking backdrop for a sweet shot and especially significant when you consider it as a symbol of freedom, happiness, contentment and home. There are tons of great murals in Wichita and a great flag mural on the west side of DoDah Diner, Douglas & Wabash (this one is up high!), Douglas & Kansas and inside Handpicked L.A. You could also buy your own at The Workroom and stage a shot wherever you like.
Sedgwick County Zoo Sculptures: Nearly everywhere at the Sedgwick County Zoo is photogenic, but the bronze lion family statue at the Pride of the Plains exhibit especially is begging for cute kids to climb all over it.
Keeper of the Plains: The Keeper is perhaps our town’s most iconic landmark and an awesome addition for an undeniably Wichita bomb. It’s easily photographable from the South side of the Arkansas River near the mini golf course at Exploration Place or on the opposite bank near the troll. Bonus: as a result of the 2014 Together Wichita initiative there are several themed ten foot tall fiberglass Keepers on Parade around town. How many can you
find?
Old Cow Town Museum One Room School House: There’s something adorable about seeing a 21st century kid in a one room school house from the “Old West.” If you’re headed back in time to the frontier you should also wrangle your hooligans for a photo op in the old jailhouse, too.
Nifty Nut House: If you’re brave enough to take your children to this candy mecca you can’t miss taking some shots with the mural on the south side of the building. It’s whimsical and the perfect place to capture your “kid in a candy store” excitement.
WuShock: This one isn’t a where, but a who. Or, should I say a Wu!He is Wichita’s most recognizable ambassador, the most unique mascot in the NCAA and tons of fun. To score a photo with WuShock you’ll need to be on the lookout for him at Wichita State athletic and campus events. Go Shockers!
