Supermom

Supermom-1

Growing up, I always had a picture in my head of what motherhood looked like. My picture was a pristine home, the kids playing nicely on the floor, a freshly made dinner prepared nightly and our evenings filled with a flawless routine of baths and bedtime stories.

After having children, I realized my view was skewed. My “picture” isn’t quite the reality of my day to day life. I often times find myself chasing after my children as they go from room to room destructing everything in their path, unloading the dishwasher with my best defensive basketball skills learned in 9th grade, and heating up a frozen dinner to plop on the table.

And, recently I’ve felt a little overwhelmed: two kids, a to-do list that could go on for days and each day, just trying to get the daily routine accomplished, let alone tackle anything extra. Then, at the perfect time, a sweet friend came over and helped me see things in a new light. I apologized for my wet hair, and she was intrigued how I showered with two kids. Her face was astonished and she stated, “You’re a SUPERMOM.” At first, I blushed and brushed it off, but when I started to think about it, I understood what she meant. Before I had kids, I couldn’t imagine myself doing half the things I do each and every day. It’s the little things you do each and every day that you probably haven’t even thought twice about that make you a SUPERMOM.

You’re a supermom…

If you can shower with a toddler at your feet and a baby on your hip.

If you can make it out of Target with your kids, no matter the circumstances – screaming, happy, it doesn’t matter.

If you can belt  “Itsy-Bitsy Spider” or “Wheels on the Bus” while driving around town to calm your child.

If you can find a way to change a diaper ANYWHERE.

If you can stay calm in the midst of a tantrum, even though you are beyond frustrated.

If you help your kids with their homework, even when it’s beyond your understanding.

If you wait to go to the bathroom, just so you can see your little one five minutes sooner after work.

If you can wake up with your child throughout the night because they are young or sick.

If you let your kids watch TV so you can have a few minutes to relax.

If you can carpool your kids from one activity to the next.

If you can hold a child while doing just about anything.

If you let your kids explore and have daily adventures.

Supermom-3

Day in and day out as mothers we are trying our best and that’s what matters. I think we all have an inner Supermom. Some days our “S” doesn’t shine as bright as others, but forget the missing shoe, spilled milk and tantrums. That “S” still shines, even on our worst days, because moms…well, they are just SUPER.
