Wichita’s Best Patios

Dining indoors is fun, but it’s of course no match to Dining Al Fresco. One of the gifts Kansas gives us in exchange for the bitter cold winters and blistering hot summers is the perfect weather days that can show up any month of the year. If the mercury is between fifty and ninety you are solidly in ideal patio weather. Not only is patio dining an especially delightful way to enjoy the outdoors, but most patios are also inherently kid friendly {a.k.a. you can be a little louder, a little rowdier, a little messier}.

And Wichita has some great offerings when the conditions are right.

Stearman Bar & Grill

Stearman Bar & Grill

Best “Air Capital” Patio : Stearman Bar & Grill
Stearman boasts a mega-sized patio on an active airport runway. On a good day you’ll see planes flying in and out and maybe even a sky-diver while you enjoy your meal. If that’s not enough, there’s also a play set for the kids. The fare is quality standard bar food, but my top pick is the weekend breakfast buffet for a perfect start to your Saturday.

The “Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover” Patio: Timbuktu Bar & Grill
Timbuktu has a loyal following of burger devotees, for good reason, but I think their patio is a hidden gem. It’s unpretentious and a fun escape.  Where else will you find outdoor TVs, a gorilla, and fried okra all in a tiki paradise without a plane ticket required?

Elderslie Farm

The “Better to Have Loved and Lost…” Patio: The Cafe at Elderslie Farm
During blackberry season, the cafe serves up breakfast on the patio next to the bramble a couple days a week.  After you’ve gotten a taste you’ll spend the next forty-eight weeks patiently waiting for another slice of farm fresh frittata.  It has it all: charming ambiance, wide open spaces, farm animals and amazing fresh food. Even if you don’t get a coveted u-pick appointment you can enjoy a morning on the farm. I’ll be there, the woman in the sunshine, one eye on my grass stained boys, one eye on my bowl of granola.

The “All In” Patio: The Brickyard
The Brickyard has totally committed to the patio lifestyle. This open air bar in the heart of Old Town is perfect for springtime happy hour or late night live music.  It isn’t kid friendly, but a great destination for girls night or date night.  Wear your dancing shoes!

The “Front and Center” Patio: Monarch
Monarch’s giant doors (leftover from its past life as Garage Bar), central location and patio games make it a fantastic place to enjoy a perfect weather day. This Delano gem boasts to-die-for sandwiches and craft brews and spirits. It’s kid friendly during the day or the perfect stop adults for before downtown concerts or shows.

The “Twice as Nice” Patio: Newport Grill
This double decker patio is an ideal date night splurge or happy hour destination. You’ll find both traditional dining and comfortable lounge seating on the Bradley Fair pond. Come for the food and drink, stay for the people watching. Don’t forget the banana bread pudding.

Harvest Kitchen & Bar

The Best “Respite from River Fest” Patio: Harvest Kitchen & Bar
Harvest is worthy of a visit any week of the year, but it’s patio is my RiverFest MVP. The farm to table menu is the perfect anecdote to the long lines and fair food. After you’ve had your yearly Pronto Pup head on over to Harvest for a perch over the river for people watching and healthy, delicious food.

The Best “Pizza Alfresco” Patios:

Ziggy’s Pizza: This neighborhood favorite is a fantastic spot for a family meal.  The pizza is a delight and the tree strung lights and (soon to be super sized) patio is awesome.

Il Vicino Bradley Fair

Il Vicino Bradley Fair

Il Vicino Wood Oven Pizza: Both Il Vicino locations are solid pint-sized patio options, this time with pre-meal dough balls. Pro-tip: order just the dough rolled out to-go and grill up delicious pizza on your own private patio.

Pacific Coast Pizza: (no longer open)
The generously sized patio at Pacific Coast is an excellent location for mild weather dining. This kid friendly restaurant has great food, but the real stars are the two bocce ball courts.  Game on!
